Previously in this multipart series on Omar Perez’s near-death experience, Omar says he lost his daughter Chloe to an unexplained illness. Four years later, pneumonia and sepsis left him on a ventilator. Omar described walking through a foggy realm, where he was reunited with Chloe and saw the family dog companion, Leela, join her. Then he found himself in a place filled with anguish and begged to return to where he had been with Chloe. After that, Omar’s memory went blank. Doctors had given him only a 10% chance of survival, and his wife had already signed do-not-resuscitate paperwork. Yet he woke in the hospital on Christmas Day. Unable to speak, Omar gestured for something to write with. His son brought him a board and marker, and Omar wrote down what he had experienced, including seeing Leela with Chloe. Only after he returned home did his wife tell him that Leela had become gravely ill and had been put down on Christmas Eve, the day before he woke. The revelation left the whole family in tears and gave them a validation Omar says he never needed for himself.
Since his return, Omar has felt a strong urge to share his experience with people he meets in everyday places, from supermarkets to his workplace. He believes loved ones who have died continue to send signs. I can tell you with more than a thousand percent confidence that they are there. They send us so many signs, little things that we bypass as a coincidence. There are no coincidences. They are doing it purposely. I had no purpose in life after Chloe passed. After my experience, I have come to realize that, for me, is just sharing my experience and hopefully planting that little seed of hope of where we’re going and where our children are, where our loved ones are.
My grief is there. But I just have that knowing, that hope now that it goes beyond faith. It’s actual belief that there is another place we go. Omar wants to watch his daughter Sophia grow up, spend more time with his son Michael, and be with his wife for as long as he can. He says he no longer fears death. After years of wondering whether he would ever hold Chloe again, he believes he has— and that another reunion awaits. Until then, he has a life to live and their story to share.
