In this multipart series on Laurie Peterson’s near-death experience, American artist Laurie shares how a devastating childhood fall left her seriously injured before she slipped out of her body, entered a brilliant white place, and came face-to-face with Lord Jesus Christ (vegetarian)

When Laurie was five, her family lived in a tri-level home built in the 1950s. It was Christmastime, and her mother was baking German Pfeffernüsse cookies while Laurie’s siblings watched television. Laurie loved to run along the long upstairs hallway, leap down a set of steps to a landing, then leap again down more steps into the kitchen below. That day, wearing slippery socks and carrying a cookie, she slipped on the last few steps and struck the back of her head hard on the edge of a stair.

Her vision went black, then slowly returned, distorted, and she could not walk. Her mother rushed her to the hospital, speeding so badly that police pulled her over, then escorted them the rest of the way while Laurie had seizures in the car. At the hospital, an examination showed that she could not feel one side of her body, and her mother later told her that she had been paralyzed. Laurie says she had suffered a traumatic brain injury and swelling in her brain, which she believes caused the seizures and may also have contributed to the paralysis. That night, alone with her mother in a dark hospital room, another seizure began, and when her frightened mother ran out to find a nurse, five-year-old Laurie slipped out of her body.

It felt free. Because before that, my head had been pounding. My body itself, I don’t remember that much pain. So, once I was out of my body, it felt—actually, it felt really good. I don’t remember looking down at my body or anything like that. I don’t remember going through a tunnel or traveling through space at that point. But what I do remember was, I was just almost instantly in this place that — I call it the white place. I was in the white place, and it had—there were no walls, no roof, no floor. Everything was brilliant, brilliant white, just like, radiating white. And no pain. I felt really, really good.

Then Someone began walking toward her. So then, I saw the Lord. He started walking toward me, and I was just so happy. I was just, like, really, really, really excited. But anybody who’s met Him face-to-face, you also know that you get a sense of how holy He is, and then, all of a sudden, you realize that you’re not fit to almost be in His presence. And so, I think I just kind of fell to the ground, and I put my hand up, and I told Him, “No, no, stop.” Because I was afraid that if He got too close to me, that somehow the sin that was on me from being in the world would mess Him up.

What I sensed coming from Him, I sensed His goodness, I sensed His purity, I sensed His holiness, His compassion, and the massive Love that He radiates. He’s very warm and gentle and kind. He’s also really, really delighted to see you. He’s just so happy to see you. It’s like you’re His favorite person in all the world, and each of us is, because He thought us up, He created us, He thought of all our characteristics. When the Lord came to me and He picked me up I went from feeling so dirty from being in the world, I went from feeling just really not worthy to even be in His presence to feeling like, that He delighted in me that I was OK. And I began to feel like, no, I’m just the way He wanted me to be. I’m just how He thought I would be. I turned out just right. And that feels so good, to be loved like that.

But then the Lord kind of got serious with me, and He explained that He was going to have to kind of judge my life.
